Netflix is testing a new search tool powered by artificial intelligence that lets you find movies and series not just by genre or actor, but also by your emotional state, writes Bloomberg
The feature, developed in collaboration with OpenAI, allows users to type in broad phrases such as “I want to watch something upbeat to lift my spirits” or “I’m in the mood for something intense and dramatic,” and the system will recommend catalog content based on those feelings.
The streaming platform was already using AI and machine learning to personalize its recommendations, but this new tool represents a further step towards a much more intuitive and empathetic experience.
According to Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, artificial intelligence “can improve creative and production processes, but it will not replace screenwriters or actors”. Even so, there is concern in Hollywood: many fear that tools like this will be used to reduce personnel and cut costs.
Currently, this feature is being tested in Australia and New Zealand, exclusively for iOS devices. In the coming months, it is planned to expand the testing to other countries, such as the United States. Unlike other features, this time users will be able to opt-in to the pilot program.
