Katy Perry took an unexpected step in her career, but this time in a direction where neither music nor millions of fans sound. The singer was part of the first all-female team to travel into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard tourist rocket. This mission not only garnered attention, but also highlighted the equality and technological advances of women in the space industry, writes Blue Origin.
Team members: stars and professionals
In addition to Katy Perry, the team was comprised of other incredible women who display an impressive level of professionalism and bravery. They include Ayesha Bove, an aerospace engineer who has participated in multiple space missions, Amanda Nguyen, a bioastronaut studying the conditions for human life outside of Earth, Gayle King, a television host and public figure, Kerryann Flynn, a producer, and Lauren Sanchez, a journalist and entrepreneur.
A moment that will go down in history
The flight lasted only 10 minutes, but it will be remembered for years to come. Three minutes after launch, the rocket undocked from the capsule, which reached an altitude of 100 km, the conventional limit between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. This was the 11th human flight for the New Shepard mission, but more importantly, it was the 31st flight in the mission’s history. It was the first all-female flight since the historic flight of Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963.
Space for everyone
This flight is not only an achievement for Katy Perry and her companions, but also an affirmation that space is a place accessible to all. From science to culture, from technology to the public sphere: women have always been and will continue to be a vital part of this incredible world, as they are in every other industry. Space is no longer the exclusive domain of men; today it becomes a perfect place to realize anyone’s ambitions, regardless of gender.
Katy Perry, as always, surprises her fans, and this time she did it through space. And although this flight was just the first step of her space career, we are already eager to see new and exciting events from this artist.
