YouTube is testing a new feature that aims to help users control the time they spend watching Shorts, Android Authority reports. The measure comes at a time when excessive consumption of this type of content is starting to generate concern among digital health experts.
Daily timer to stop endless scrolling
In the latest beta version of the app, developers discovered a daily timer feature specific to Shorts – separate from the general “Take a break” reminder. The idea is to interrupt continuous playback once the user has reached his or her preset daily limit.
However, this is not a total ban: some Shorts will still be available from the main screen or search results. But the goal is clear: to reduce impulsive consumption.
Why this measure now?
YouTube Shorts accumulates more than 70 billion daily views. Google has strongly promoted the format, but is also beginning to recognize the negative effects that prolonged consumption of this content can have.
According to Android Authority, the company adds to the growing concern about the effects of doomscrolling: loss of attention, poor time management and reduced learning ability. This feature could be the first step in curbing those effects – at least, a little.
